The new science of exercise
The following link is to an article entitled, "The new science of exercise". When I was teaching I would share this article with all my classes. It highlights the fact that physical exercise is the most effective, potent thing we can do to improve the quality and duration of our life. At some point we may go to the doctor and get a prescription to exercise as readily as we get a drug prescription today. The article points out that those who don't exercise are at greater risk for cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, and early death from all causes. Inactivity can worsen arthritis and low back pain. Physical exercise is also an excellent treatment for depression. Physical exercise increases blood flow, increases bone strength, increases skin texture and reduces wrinkles, and burns fat. As previously stated, the article provides strong evidence that the single most effective thing you can do to improve the quality and quantity of your life is to exercise. It is also indicated that relative small amounts of exercise can provide extensive benefits.
